Pieces that Checkmate

Chess is arguably considered to be the most difficult sport to exist. It involves tactics, strategic traps, and steady planning for later moves. It can be from a simple game with someone else or an intense battle on the board. Studying moves that were made can prevent you from making the same mistake in future endeavors. Because games are now based on memorization, hundreds of games are repeated to a certain point from the many opening strategies that exist. Kings Indian, French, Ruy Lopez, and Queen’s Gambit are among the favorite for beginners and intermediate players.

Most Common Openings

Chess has existed since the beginning of the 15th century. The king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, and pawns have been the members of many battles throughout history, and chessboards are no different.

The month of August has only begun, but the Chess World Cup is almost complete. Sergey Karjakin from Russia, and Jan-Krzysztof Duda from Poland have played to a draw in their first game to determine the winner and runner-up. The World Champion, Magnus Carlsen from Norway, is up against Vladimir Fedoseev from Russia to determine third place. The tournaments are two-out-of-three, with more games to be added if more games proceed to a draw.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen has been the world champion since 2013 by defeating then champion Viswanathan Anand. Carlsen is known to be a strong chess player and arguably the greatest player of all time. He has defended his world championship title twice against Sergey Karjakin in 2016 and Fabiano Caruana in 2018. He will compete in November against contender Ian Nepomniachtchi to defend his world championship title for a third time.

Chess has become widely popular due to the Netflix limited show, “Queen’s Gambit.” Anya-Taylor Joy played a chess prodigy who went from being put in a foster home to becoming world champion. Many people joined the sport of chess to become the next great player, learning chess theory and watching games played by the super grandmasters, like Carlsen!

It’s not only a sport played by the very best, but a simple board game that can be played anywhere. Chess isn’t always a brutal, planned out process between players, chess can also be a thing of beauty.
