Chromebook Users Will Now Have to Use Office on the Web

Mark your calendars for September 18, Chromebook users, because Microsoft will be killing off its support for Office, according to TechCrunch. Since 2017, you were able to download apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook via the Google Play store, but in a few weeks, you will have to use Office on the web instead.

“In an effort to provide the most optimized experience for Chromebook customers, Microsoft apps (Office and Outlook) will be transitioned to web experiences (Office.com and Outlook.com) on September 18, 2021,” states Microsoft.

Because the Office apps on the Play Store are designed for small, touchscreen mobile devices (such as tablets and smartphones), Chromebook users will see a huge improvement in functionality and a large increase in features after they transition to the web-based application. It’s important to note that even though Microsoft is discontinuing Office support for Chrome OS, they will continue to support Android-based mobile devices.

In order to use the web app, Chromebook users will have to “sign in with their personal Microsoft Account or account associated with their Microsoft 365 subscription.” Microsoft has also provided documentation on how to transition to the online version of Office.

If you have already downloaded Office onto your Chromebook, you will still be able to use it, but keep in mind that after September 18, the app will no longer receive updates nor support from Microsoft.
