If you’re like me, you may generally try to lead a healthier lifestyle. If you’re also like me, you may also suffer from allergies year around. As someone with perpetual breathing problems, sometimes I can see, or feel, then coming from a mile away; other times, they sneak up on my like a ton of bricks.
I have had asthma my entire life. I can feel my flare ups coming and reoccurring with the seasons. Most of my flare ups can last anywhere between a day or so to weeks. I have grown to firmly believe that applying herbal concoctions, in addition to my prescribed asthma medications, helps knock my symptoms out much faster and smoother.
As a healthcare worker, I do know a thing or two about medicines and antibiotics that come to rescue as a last resort when I feel. I, by no means, underestimate or under appreciate modern medicine. But sometimes, it doesn’t hurt to try and to supplement modern medicine with herbal remedies.
As someone who loves tea, probably more than one single human being should, I swear on my life that nothing knocks out allergies and colds like a tag-team of Mucinex and a hot cuppa (cuppa is British for tea). I have found that a blend of herbal tea and green tea make the best combo.
Here are favorite blends of herbs and teas that make a magical botanical potion to help ease common aliments caused by asthma, colds and other season allergies.
Herbs/Teas for Asthma, Colds and Allergies
If you have enough spices to give a trader on the Silk Road a run for their money, you don’t have to look much farther than your cupboard when start to feel the sniffles coming on.
Some of my tried and true favorite medicinal herbs for my asthma and allergy problems are:
- Ginger- an anti-inflammatory that relieves inflammation in the airways, while also acting as a bronchodilator that improves the affects of asthma medication when taken together.
- Peppermint- anti-inflammatory and soothes muscles, and also yummy.
- Rose hip- the fruit of a rose plant that it rich in Vitamin C.
- Fennel- a natural antispasmodic that relieves muscle spasms in the lungs that restrict breathing.
- Turmeric- an anti-inflammatory that also helps clear airway obstructions in the lungs; like ginger, it is a great addition to other asthma medications.
- Licorice- has widely been used to help treat the symptoms of asthma, though can increase blood pressure.
- Mullein- works not only as an anti-inflammatory to help soothe lungs; but is also an expectorant, which helps the body cough up more mucus.
- Eucalyptus- helps reduce inflammation, decreases mucus, and helps expand bronchioles in the lungs.
- Echinacea- can be used to prevent colds and flu by boosting the immune system.
- Chamomile- an antihistamine that helps with allergies.
Each of these herbs in particular help tremendously with soothing asthma and breathing aliments, especially when combined with tea. They can be made into a tea just by themselves by steeping them in hot water, or in combination with tea.
Green tea is the most popular go-to tea for wellness needs. Green in particular has been hailed throughout the ages for its rich antioxidant properties. It certainly is my favorite go to for a wellness boost.
Some of my favorite wellness tea brands are Magic Hour and Megan’s Marvelous Medicinals.
I cannot recommend these two brands enough! Magic Hour soothes both the body and the soul, literally any tea from Magic Hour can help with breathing and other aliments. Megan’s Marvelous Medicinals use natural herbs to create lovely soothing potions of healing.
With the pandemic still going on, everyone needs every bit of help they can get to stay healthy.
